15 Oct 2015 – Fight Food Waste, Feed the Planet!

In the context of Expo Milano 2015, the European Commission organizes the international conference “Fight Food Waste, Feed the Planet”. The event aims to contribute to the setting of EU and global directions for food waste prevention, focusing in particular on the importance of effective inter-sector co-operation from farm to fork. The conference will gather EU and international policy makers as well as all stakeholders involved in the food chain – from industry to non-governmental organizations, the scientific community and consumers – in order to share achievements to date and foster an open and action-oriented debate.

About a third of all food produced globally for human consumption is lost or wasted – around 1.3 billion tonnes per year, according to the Food and Agriculture Organisation. In the EU it is estimated that around 100 million tonnes of food are wasted annually in the EU. If nothing is done, food waste could rise to over 120 million tonnes by 2020.

Wasting food is not only an ethical and economic issue but it also depletes the environment of limited natural resources. All actors in the food chain have a role to play in preventing and reducing food waste whilst ensuring food safety from farm to fork.

The conference will seek to promote an integrated approach to food waste prevention and reduction involving all actors concerned. During the conference, interventions will be followed by an interactive panel session.

The event will be webstreamed as well as covered live on Twitter – follow @Food_EU and send your comments or questions using #EUStopFoodWaste (during the conference). We will pass them to the conference moderator and try to have them answered by the experts in the panels within the limit of available time. The link to the webstreaming will be added to this page in the coming days.
